The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and education programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include climbing, hiking, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, CrossFit, boxing, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in California, Colorado, Idaho, and Massachusetts.


The primary responsibility of this position is to lead and instruct programs for The Phoenix, with a focus on outdoor activities, in the Denver Metro area (including Boulder). A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Full-time instructors at The Phoenix are also expected to aid in administrative functions of the chapter, such as keeping events up to date on our website, facility and equipment maintenance, conducting outreach events, assisting with fundraising efforts, trainings, or other projects that may arise. Weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel in the community are required.



-Lead multiple classes each week (these may include indoor or outdoor Rock Climbing, Hiking, Mountain Biking, CrossFit, Boxing, Olympic Lifting, Yoga, etc.)
-Plan and lead outdoor programs such as day hikes, backpacking, or car-camping trips
-Facilitate partnership and community programming as assigned (including ensuring coverage of programs as needed)
-Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), and reflect The Phoenix Core Values and Community Standards
-Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events
-Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
-Carry out administrative functions , including updating program schedule on our website, conducting outreach events and data entry
-Support the achievement of quarterly and annual community programming and partnership goals
-Manage retail and merchandise inventory, restocking, and reordering
-Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
-Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
-Contribute to social media through Facebook, twitter and Instagram
-All other duties as assigned


-Experience facilitating group fitness programs
-Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
-Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
-Minimum High School Education or GED
-Certification(s) in one or more disciplines
-1-2 Years' experience in program instructions within field of certification
-Good organizational and time management skills
-Ability to organize trips and events from big picture down to minute details
-Ability to manage and progress on multiple tasks within a given day or week
-Demonstrate good verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people in a group setting
-Interact positively and comfortably with people from all walks of life, including homeless persons, recently sober individuals, high net worth donors, elected officials, etc.
-Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
-Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
-An ability to work in a high-paced, ever-changing environment
-Willingness to be flexible with hours, including working early mornings, late evenings, or weekends as needed
-AMGA-CWI and/or AMGA-SPI preferred for climbing instructors
-NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE certification for personal trainers
-CF-L1 or higher-level certification preferred for CrossFit Instructors
-YT-200 or higher preferred for yoga instructors
-NOLS or SOLO-WFR or WFA preferred for outdoor program instructors
-CPR/AED preferred for all instructors
-Other certifications applicable to discipline
