The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and education programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road & mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in California, Colorado, Idaho, and Massachusetts.



The primary responsibility of this position is to instruct programming for The Phoenix Boise, which may include indoor rock climbing, CrossFit or other group fitness classes, hiking, mountain biking, or yoga. A strong connection to The Phoenix Mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

The Phoenix is a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment requiring employees to be flexible and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Part-time instructors at The Phoenix may also be asked to aid in administrative functions of the chapter, such as keeping events up to date on our website, facility and equipment maintenance, conducting outreach events, assisting with fundraising efforts, trainings, or other projects that may arise. Weekend and evening hours and the ability to travel in the community are required.



  • Coach  classes each week (these may include indoor rock climbing, CrossFit, fundamentals courses, boxing, Olympic lifting, yoga, hiking, mountain biking, camping, etc.)
  • Facilitate partnership and community programming as assigned
  • Spread the word about The Phoenix at targeted outreach events
  • Manage retail and merchandise inventory, restocking, and reordering
  • Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, and programming and partnership team meetings
  • Carry out administrative functions , including updating program schedule on our website, conducting outreach events and data entry
  • Under supervision of the Boise Chapter Director, ensure coverage of community and partnership programs
  • Assist with facility maintenance and upkeep to ensure the facility and programming space are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, welcoming), reflect The Phoenix Core Values and Community Standards
  • Support the achievement of quarterly and annual community programming and partnership goals
  • Review and respond promptly, accurately and cordially to all inquiries
  • Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
  • Contribute to social media through Facebook, twitter and Instagram
  • All other duties as assigned



  • Experience facilitating group fitness programs
  • Familiarity with other disciplines, including yoga, climbing, running, cycling, etc. is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
  • Minimum High School Education or GED
  • Certification(s) in one or more disciplines (AMGA-CWI or AMGA-SPI; NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE personal trainer; CF-L1 or higher-level CrossFit; YT-200 Yoga; etc.)
  • First Aid or other medical training (e.g. WFR, CPR/AED) preferred
  • 1-2 Years' experience in program instructions within field of certification
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to organize events from big picture down to minute details
  • Ability to manage and progress on multiple tasks within a given day or week.
  • Demonstrate good verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people in a group setting.
  • Interact positively and comfortably with people from all walks of life, including homeless persons, recently sober individuals, high net worth donors, elected officials, etc.
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment, and proficient with software including word processing, spreadsheet applications and email
  • Comfortable working in a high-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Willingness to be flexible with hours, including working early mornings, late evenings, or weekends as needed
